Ah, a fine question me laddie/lassy. What exactly is this club all about? Well the faculty-maintained compmath homepage would say "Today, various sectors of industry face increasingly larger-scale problems that can be solved only by people who have specialized knowledge and skills in computer modeling of mathematical problems" but if you ask a professor they might be be just as flabbergasted at describing it as we are. We'll make an attempt, though.
Basically you find CM anywhere that computer science and math overlap in a weird way that needs a certain mindset. Mathies still use Windows and CSers can't do induction, so CM is there to fill the gap. From finding efficient and accurate numerical solutions to intractable problems, to digging through mounds of data, CM has it all. Or at least that's what we like to tell ourselves.
We are an academic club with a social-bent. The CMC is a good place to hang out, work on homework, or just generally meet some pretty chill and interesting people.
Members have access to the CMC's playstation-threes, famous for having the hyper-parallel cell processor. PS3s have been successfully used in scientific computation and are the topic of a course at MIT.
We recently had a digits of pi compution competition! Click here for more information and to see who won!
We haven't had any projects on the go in a while, mostly because there aren't many of us and we're busy, but we have some ideas. For all the details see our projects page.
Much like many of the other academic math clubs, we try to bring in speakers to enlighten us about all things CM or let students show off their stuff.
The events page has all the gorey details of past and upcoming events. If you want to run an event through us, please let us know!
We try to keep the club office open as much as we can, but we're small so it's totally ad-hoc. If you're the sort of person who hangs around campus late at night for more than just getting grades come by and visit! We have tea.
Location: MC 3034, in the same hallway as the CSC and PMC, with a big yellow poster on the door.
